What Am I Supposed to Do for a Career?
“What am I supposed to do for a career?”
It’s a huge question.
Especially when you’re 18, 20, or 24 and people keep asking what you’re going to do with your life.
Maybe you have no idea.
Or maybe you have ten ideas.
You’re thinking:
What am I actually good at?
What do I enjoy?
Can I make enough money doing it?
Do I need college?
What if I choose the wrong thing?
Here’s something I wish more young people were told:
You are not choosing one career for the rest of your life.
You’re choosing what to explore next.
I know that from my own life.
I’ve been a teacher, singer-songwriter, author, rabbi, coach, business owner, and content creator. I definitely didn’t sit down at 18 and plan all of that.
One thing led to another.
I tried things. I learned what I was good at. I learned what I liked. I changed direction.
That’s part of the LionUP® approach too.
Instead of sitting there waiting for the perfect answer to suddenly appear, start collecting information about you.
What are you naturally good at?
What kind of work gives you energy?
What kind of life do you want your career to support?
And yes, money matters too. Loving something doesn’t automatically mean it can support the life you want.
You’re looking for the intersection between who you are, what you can become good at, what people will pay for, and the life you actually want.
Then try something.
Take a class. Talk to someone who does the job. Get an internship. Work somewhere. Start a small project.
You may discover, I love this.
Or you may discover, Absolutely not.
Both answers are useful.
Clarity often comes after movement, not before it.
So if you don’t know what you’re supposed to do for a career yet, you don’t need to solve the next 40 years.
Figure out what you want to explore next.
Then take one brave step.
