What Am I Doing With My Time?

I've been thinking about this because growing up was so different for us.

We were bored.

Like really bored.

There wasn't a phone to pick up every time you had five minutes with nothing to do.

If there was nothing to do, well... there was nothing to do.

So we found things.

For me, I wrote songs. I created stuff. We went places. Called people. Sat around with friends.

Sometimes we did absolutely nothing.

But eventually boredom made you do something.

And now?

It feels like scrolling became a part-time job.

I actually did the math.

If you scroll for 3 hours a day, that's 21 hours a week.

Four hours a day is 28 hours.

That's literally the amount of time someone could work at a part-time job.

And I'm not saying this like I don't use my phone. I do. A lot.

So this isn't me blaming Gen Z or saying phones are terrible.

I just wonder what happened to all those empty hours.

Because if you're 18 or 20 or 24 and you're trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, that takes time too.

You need time to try something.

To go somewhere.

Meet people.

Work.

Learn something.

Create something.

Even try something and realize, nope, this isn't for me.

That's part of figuring yourself out.

And I wonder how much of that time we're spending watching everybody else live instead.

Maybe boredom wasn't such a terrible thing.

Maybe it pushed us to do things simply because there was nothing else to do.

I don't know.

But I think before asking,

“What am I doing with my life?”

it might be worth asking something much smaller:

“What am I doing with my time?”
