If Nobody Was Watching, What Would You Try?

If Nobody Was Watching, What Would You Try?

How many things do we not try because we don't want people to see us being bad at them?

I mean, if you've never done something before, of course you might be terrible at it.

That's kind of the point of trying.

But being a beginner in front of other people isn't always easy.

What if I look stupid?

What if I try it and it doesn't work?

What if I tell everyone I'm doing it and then change my mind?

Sometimes nobody even has to say anything.

Just knowing people are watching can be enough.

You're allowed to be bad at something

I think we've gotten a little too used to seeing the finished version of everything.

We see the video after it's edited.

The business after it starts working.

The singer when she's already good.

The person who lost the weight after they lost it.

The career announcement after somebody got the job.

We don't always see all the awkward stuff that happened before that.

And everybody has that part.

You can't really try something new without being new at it.

And then there's social media

There's another side to this that I find interesting.

We're not only worried about people watching us.

We're watching everybody else too.

YouTubers. Influencers. People starting businesses. Traveling. Making money. Getting jobs. Building these lives that we see every day.

And sometimes I think it's worth asking:

Do I actually want to try this?

Or have I watched somebody else do it so many times that now I think I want it too?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a YouTuber or an influencer or starting a business.

Maybe that's exactly what you want.

But would you still want to create if nobody liked it?

Would you still want to sing if nobody heard you?

Would you still want to start the business if nobody thought it was impressive?

I don't know.

I think those are interesting questions.

Doing your own thing

For me, I've always been pretty comfortable doing my own thing.

That doesn't mean I don't care about people.

Of course I do.

I want to be kind. I care how I treat people.

But that's different from letting other people's opinions decide what I'm willing to try.

And maybe that's something worth separating.

Caring about people and living for their approval are not the same thing.

So here's the question

Forget for a minute whether you'd be good at it.

Forget whether anybody would like it.

Forget whether you'd post it.

Forget whether it would become a career or make money or turn into anything at all.

If nobody was watching, what would you try?

Maybe there's something there you've never given yourself permission to be bad at yet.

Still figuring out what comes next?

That's really why I created Escape STUCK™.

It's a 9-week journey for young adults who are trying to figure out things like career, college, money, independence, and what they actually want their life to look like.

Not because I have all the answers. I don't.

But I do think we need a place to ask these questions before making some pretty big decisions.

If you're feeling stuck, unsure what direction to take, or just trying to figure out your next step, you can learn more here:
