You Don't Have One Brain. You Have Three
Bronze. Silver. Gold. A simple framework that changes how you see yourself and others.
If you’re a parent of a teen or a young adult,
this might sound familiar.
Some days, things feel calm.
Clear.
Connected.
And other days, everything feels tense.
Reactive.
Overwhelming, for you and for them.
Most of us think this is about behavior.
But it’s not.
It’s about zone.
one of the core frameworks I created
is called the GoldZone Cycle.
It’s a simple way to understand
what’s actually happening in the brain ,
for us and for our kids.
We tend to think we have one brain.
But really, we move through three zones.
You may have heard them described as
the survival brain, the emotional brain, and the thinking brain.
I translate that into something more visual:
Bronze.
Silver.
Gold.
When we’re in Bronze, we’re in survival.
Fight. Flight. Freeze.
There’s fear, control, and urgency.
When we’re in Silver, we’re functioning, but on autopilot.
Busy. Reactive. Going through the motions.
And when we’re in Gold,
we’re calm. Clear.
Able to think, choose, and respond.
That’s where independence grows.
Here’s the part most parents miss.
When our kids are acting out,
or shutting down,
or feeling stuck,
it’s not a character problem.
It’s not a motivation problem.
It’s a zone problem.
And when we drop into Bronze,
we rescue.
We fix.
We control.
Not because we’re bad parents,
but because our nervous system wants safety now.
The goal isn’t perfect behavior.
The goal is helping our kids,
and ourselves ,
spend more time in the Gold Zone.
That’s where the lighthouse lives.
Calm.
Present.
Grounded.
Not steering the ship ,
but making it possible for them to steer.
