Why Emotional Intelligence Matters More Than Straight A's
Because life isn’t a test , it’s a series of moments.
We celebrate grades.
We reward performance.
We focus on results.
And of course, those things matter.
But they’re not what determines how someone moves through life.
Because life doesn’t test you on math.
It tests you on moments.
Moments like:
- being left out
- getting frustrated
- feeling misunderstood
- dealing with disappointment
And in those moments, what matters most isn’t intelligence.
It’s emotional awareness.
Can you recognize what you’re feeling?
Can you pause instead of react?
Can you respond instead of explode?
These are skills.
And like any skill, they can be taught.
But most kids are expected to “figure it out.”
So they grow up reacting, shutting down, or avoiding.
That’s not a character flaw.
It’s a missing skill.
This was something I became very aware of as a parent.
And it changed how I approached everything.
Less “fix the behavior.”
More “understand the feeling.”
That shift makes a huge difference.
And it’s something I wanted to pass on, not just to my girls, but to other kids too.
That’s why this became a core part of my book.
After a few years in the making,
The Secret Life Skills for Confident Kids is coming out April 30.
Because raising confident kids isn’t about controlling them.
It’s about helping them understand themselves.
