Am I Ready to Be on My Own?

Am I Ready to Be on My Own?

I think a lot of young adults want this.

Your own place.

Your own space.

Your own life.

No parents asking where you're going or when you're coming home. 😂

Sounds pretty good.

And then you start looking at the numbers.

Rent.

Okay.

Then utilities.

Food.

Car.

Insurance.

Phone.

Internet.

Furniture.

Deposits.

And all the random things you never really thought about because they were just... there.

Toilet paper. Laundry detergent. Cleaning stuff. Food in the refrigerator.

It adds up.

And then there's the bigger question.

How much should you have saved before you move out?

One month?

Three months?

What happens if your car breaks down?

What if your hours at work get cut?

Do you need a roommate?

I mean, how do you actually know when you're ready?

Because wanting to move out and being able to afford to move out are two different things.

And I don't think that means you need to have everything perfect before you leave home.

Who does?

But you probably need to know what your life is actually going to cost.

Not just the rent.

The whole life.

Maybe that's where you start.

Before asking, “Can I afford this apartment?”

Ask:

“Can I afford the life that comes with it?”

If you've already moved out, I'm curious.

How did you know you were financially ready?
